It is possible to upgrade TreePlotter™ to display Ordnance Survey maps in addition to the standard base map options. We’ll look at what you’ll get if you upgrade, what you need to provide, and how it can be configured to best suit you. OS MasterMap is a digital mapping product created and maintained by Ordnance Survey, but it only covers Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales).
Adding this functionality to TreePlotter is a chargeable extra.
Topics covered in this document:
- What you will receive
- What we will need
- Customisation options
- Public vs Private sectors
- Address parcels
What you will receive:
- The Base Maps button on the Navigation toolbar will have three new map options
- OS Maps: Road
- OS Maps: Outdoor
- OS Maps: Light
- A complementary boundary line (optional)
- This will denote the area that you are responsible for, usually the overall outline of Wards, Parishes or Districts

What we will need:
- A purchase order, if this didn’t already form part of your original subscription
- The API key for your OS maps
- It should look something like this:
- You can also just send the key part from the end
- Don’t include the ‘Secret’ key
- If you would like us to sign an OS Licence Agreement with you, please send it over and we’ll arrange that.
Customisation options:
- Which map appears by default – it can be any of the 3 variations of OS Maps, or it could still be a Google base map and then you turn the OS map on when needed
- Who can see the map – it will only appear when you are logged in (so the public can’t access it) but it can be further restricted to only appear for certain roles (which we would recommend if you are in the private sector)
- Boundary line
- Whether it is active by default of if you turn it on from the legend when needed
- The colour of the line
- By default you’ll receive a white line if your default base map is satellite imagery, and a black line if your default is OS maps
- If you wish to show the individual outline of each Ward, District or Parish, those are available to purchase as separate reference layers
Public vs Private sectors:
If you are a council, you should already have a PSGA (Public Sector Geospatial Agreement) with Ordnance Survey. You/your IT department can simply send over the key.
If you are not in the public sector, you can still set up a key. Please note that this will entitle you to £1000 of tile usage per month for free, but if you exceed that you may be invoiced by OS.
To set up an OS key, here are the instructions, though you may wish to delegate to the IT department.
- Go to https://osdatahub.os.uk/plans
- Click ‘Start for Free’ on the Premium Plan
- Fill in the contact details
- Click Create an Account
- On the Dashboard go to My Projects and create a new one
- Click on the Add API button and add the OS Maps API to the project
- Switch the project to Live
- You may need to supply a credit card, but we have had customers not do that and it works just fine
- Please copy the ZXY OS Maps key and email it to uksupport@planitgeo.com
Address Parcels:
When new trees are plotted, it will still use Google to populate the address. If you would be interested in having TreePlotter use OS Maps provide the address, please let support know.
